Lehigh River - Hickory Run Group Campground
Organized Group Tent Camping at Hickory Run State Park , , Albrightsville, PA, 18210

Event Type

The Lehigh Mega should happen and we should have camping and trips all 3 days. Fast flushy rapids with big waves and lots of on the fly surf in waves, wavy holes and even pretty scary looking holes.

Bring a fast boat for on the fly wave catching for extra fun.

OCT 11, Friday Morning – releases will be increased to 3500 cubic feet per second (plus inflow, max 4000, so about 3650 so on Friday a good roll is mandatory. Swimmers will likely be asked to leave the trip at Tannery or Rockport. Most likely we’ll do White Haven to the Glen. Frank will be raft captaining.

OCT 12, Saturday Morning – releases will be decreased to 2000 cubic feet per second (plus inflow, max 2500 cubic feet per second, so about 2150). We’ll have a big crew and try to start together, but most likely split into fast and slow (surfing) group. Most likely we’ll do Rockport to the Glen. Frank and Mark (Mariusz) will be raft captaining.

OCT 13, Sunday  – release will be decreased to 800 cubic feet per second (plus inflow). Basically a normal release.  Tracy Lenior will be coordinating not starting too early the Whitehaven to Rockport .

For those that haven’t done the Lehigh at bigger water, rolling is really nice as swims are long. There are lots of big, avoidable holes and good on-the-fly surfing (best for longer boats as boat speed matters). Almost nothing is retentive (well, don’t ask us about Triple Drop) and water is relatively warm (still likely heavier wetsuit at a minimum…it is October).
It’s a chance to hit holes and waves you wouldn’t normally hit…or just float fast in a pretty place.

We often paddle from White Haven or even the dam all the way to the Glen and often split into fast and play groups.

We’re camping at Hickory Run Group campsites and have a site reserved for Friday and Saturday and will add Thursday if there’s demand.
Porta Potties and no showers on site but otherwise comfortable, large sites (with showers and nice bathrooms a short drive away at the ‘real’ campground).

Free Bonus – Food will be pot luck with burgers and dogs left over from the Zomgaup BBQ unless someone volunteers to coordinate. Contact us to volunteer to help or learn more.  We’ll have likely have a charcoal grill going both nights and propane stoves and the like to share.

Plan on bringing some food to contribute and helping.

Adult beverages are technically prohibited so plan on being discreet (like drinking from an insulated mug).

SHUTTLING. It’s the Lehigh with lots of water which means long shuttles. If you can’t shuttle on both ends  any day and/or if you can’t carry your boat and one other let us know in the comments. Friday will likely start later as most folks are driving in.

You can only sign yourself up for paddling but if folks are camping and not paddling you can sign up and pay for them for camping only (as there’s no waiver, insurance requirement for camping). For non- paddlers the Lehigh Gorge offers hiking, rail trail biking and the historic Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad.
