maybe we can dispense with the raft entirely and just let them float down the river in their pants.

The actual “lfd’s” don’t look very practical (and they’re probably an entrapment hazard for hardboaters), but I can appreciate the general concept. I’m a bit more buoyant than I used to be, but with or without a life jacket I tend to float in an upright position. I can definitely say that when I swam the Hudson narrows a couple of years ago I would have appreciated some additional buoyancy in my lower legs.
