Whitewater paddling without a car is a bit of a challenge but is entirely doable. Using public transit for everything except the boat is easy enough.
To aid in setting up carpools, once you’ve joined as a member or guest, you’ll be able to see participants town after their name and get their contact info thru our member directory. To get a ride, mention it in the comments when you sign up, reach out directly to the coordinator and possibly post on our FaceBook page.
You might have to do some work and research public transit options. Many members live in the suburbs and can easily meet at a train or bus station along the way, but won’t be familiar with schedules.
Owning a car isn’t cheap, so consider helping with tolls, gas or snacks.
Carpoolers often are borrowing equipment as well and may need to work with our equipment manager and the coordinator to get the needed equipment to the river.
Renting a vehicle is another option . Smaller boats will fit in most cars and there’s a plethora of foam or inflatable roof rack systems designed to go on any car.
As for shuttling, it’s part of paddling and everyone is expected to participate unless they’ve been excused by the coordinator. Failure to participate in shuttles is grounds for not being allowed on the trip or even being excluded from the club. For most trips this isn’t much of an issue, but the Lehigh with more beginners (with their bigger boats and fewer roof racks)and longer shuttles has been a problem.
