Hot dog, we’re doing it. We are excited to announce that KCCNY creekers Andy Frey and Steven Strange ( will teach a Creeking Step-up Clinic on the Shohola this Fall, whenever we get enough rain. Shohola Creek holds water well, so we expect days or weeks of notice before the clinic occurs. Creeking is a solid step up from running a regular river, so make sure your roll is in working order before registering.
EXACT DATE TO BE DETERMINED when we have or our likely to have the right levels, so if you’re interested, sign up and we’ll email when we have rain and can guess at likely dates.
Shohola like most natural flow generally gets more reliable as we get into the fall -though not this year – when all these darn trees stop taking our water to grow. Shahola does hold well if things ever get wet again.
From Steve:
Of course, we could also open the location up to 3 or 4 choices and see which one runs, the one skill that would be difficult to teach/practice on some rivers is boofing, but that’s about it. Creek protocol, scouting, safety set-up, etc. could be covered on a lot of runs.
In terms of skills/gear, Yes good eddy catching ability and a reasonably reliable roll are key. A creek boat is a good idea, but if someone is very comfortable in their river runner or half slice that would be fine as well.
Nowadays I always wear a full face and elbow pads when creeking, but that wasn’t always the case. I’d certainly recommend both but not require them. If someone was considering purchasing one or the other just to try out some creeking, I think I’d say get the pads first (assuming you already have a good helmet).
Limited to 6 per class…eddies are small on creeks including the Shahola. Once we get a date we’ll give preference to folks who signed up first then the wait-list then open things up.
