Long, 15-mile day that ends in a 3-mile float out. Remote, with long, wide rapids, so class 3+ with a near bomb-proof roll or brace (’cause if you’ve got a great brace you don’t need a roll;-) and the ability to pick a line in bigger water and blast a hole. (Tohicon level at the least).
Rain in the forecast so the level may be higher than standard release, though a high water run is unlikely…meaning the river might be slightly rocky and final 3 mile flatwater paddle out should be much nicer. Normal low water gives you just enough water to get out and a little extra water gets you more above the rocks on the final 3 miles.
Starts with several miles on the Indian which is like the hardest hundred yards of the Mongaup for nearly a mile. Experienced paddlers love it.
Be forewarned. If you swim on the Indian we’ll have the talk. If you swim twice on the Indian you are walking off, period, as once you enter the gorge things get very remote.
Raft going as well and looking for a few folks to fill it.
There’s also beautiful and more accessible easier paddling below the gorge.
Plan to camp Friday and run river Saturday. Hudson releases on Sunday as well for those who want to make a weekend of it. Indian laps and or Sacandaga on the way down are popular choices for those who want to paddle more but don’t want to do a second long day on the river.
