Event Type

That’s coordinating for beginning coordinators and beginning paddlers.
The responsibilities of the official trip coordinator are minimal and do not include responsibility for safely leading others down the river. Our official trip rules specifically state that everyone is responsible for themselves.

Google Meet session starting at 7.30 pm (and meeting will start by 7:40) on how to make coordinating easy including using the website to submit and administer a trip, accessing skills and equipment*, post-trip procedures (but feel free to read thru our how to coordinate page), including making beginners feeling welcome like helping them empty their boats.

Sign in to this website as a member to see the google meet or sign up (below) if you’re interested in sitting in and not a member.

If this time doesn’t work for you let the coordinator know what will as we’ll try to have another one.

We’ll follow up with an on water day to go over the above in real life and moving water as well as some safety that can only be practiced in water like wading, moving water boat plowing and real-world rescues…most likely during and after a late spring Mongaup.

Agenda:

  1. Why coordinate:
    Insurance
    Inclusiveness
    Giving back
If you’re getting out anyway, why not post?
  2. Equipment: check for inflated float bags, tight helmets and pfds.
Clothing – cold water kills. Everyone should be dressed not only for swim but also for continuing trip after swim.
  3. How to select and turn away participants. It’s OK to say that you don’t have the skills to rescue them and to postpone decision until more folks sign up.
Ask where they’ve paddled and with whom.
Kick them off if they’ve seriously misrepresented.
  4. Using the website (to make it easy).
  5. Where to coordinate for beginners:
    Flat to class 1:
Delaware anywhere but especially  in conjunction with Mongaup and Wing Dam, Green Turtle Lake, West Milford, Lehigh section 3 and Glen Onoko.
    Class 2:
Lehigh (lots of options, discuss shuttle), Croton (easier at lower levels with  eddies  and clean water for rolling. launch from Mayo’s or train station), Scudders Falls, Lackawaxen.
  6. What happens if you can’t make it when you are coordinating?
  7. Further training – 50% reimbursement
*The picture at top is from a sunk boat on this spring’s Toh. Float bags hadn’t been inflated. The boat got pinned, filled completely and it took skill boaters several hundred yards to get it to shore.
